My History
I began training in martial arts when I was 10 years old. My interest back then was sparked from a steady diet of popular media (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Jackie Chan movies, comic books, etc). I suppose it also didn’t hurt my enthusiasm when I learned that martial arts training can help someone small, like I was, defeat someone larger, like my bullies were.
So, after much begging my mother relented and I began training in Uechi Ryu style of Karate. This lasted for about a year, until the dojo closed. It was just as well, though. My family didn’t have much money, so I would have had to stop anyway.
My training resumed in my later teens, and at that time I selected to train in Combat Hapkido (more on this in other posts). It was there that I dedicated my B.S.T. (Blood, Sweat, & Tears) until circumstances forced me to move out of state.
After I had finally settled I took up Kyokushin Karate. My dojo is amazing, my instructor is encouraging and demanding, and despite my height and weight disadvantages, I am enjoying the style’s challenges tremendously.
